rather than

leaders

–Training for Leaders
We
often talk about “competence“ as a
leader . The HSE
recognises four ways of being deemed competent
.
These are :
Holding a
relevant qualification ( e.g.
ML
, WGL
for Hill-Walking )
Holding an
equivalent qualification (Guides
Association Walking Scheme /ELB Awards
Suitable in-house
training /assessment
such as training provided by
an organization or club
Competence
through experience .
Walking group Leader Award
This
award is for leaders of
walking groups in
summer conditions in non -mountainous
hilly terrain such as upland , bog
, moor
, hill . The scheme
helps to develop the necessary skills
, self sufficiency
and experience for all weather
conditions . To
complete the scheme you must register with MLTNI
and join one of the mountaineering
councils. You then
fulfill the pre-training requirements
, attend a three day training
course , fulfill
pre-assessment requirements and finally attend a three day assessment
course .

Mountain Leader Award
Mountains are usually remote and
exposed to
harsh and unpredictable
weather .
They are therefore hazardous
for novice walkers , the ML course
is designed to help
responsible leaders to operate in mountainous terrain in summer conditions
. These courses teach group management skills , ability to deal with
mountain hazards ,
navigational skills for all
conditions and increase environmental awareness . There is an expedition
element to the scheme .
To complete the scheme you must register with MLTNI
and join one of the mountaineering councils.
You then fulfill the
pre-training requirements , attend
a six
day training
course , fulfill
pre-assessment requirements and finally attend a five day assessment
course .

Club Specific Training
Tollymore has provided training to
a number of clubs e.g.
Wee Binnians
and Mourne
ramblers based on needs . This is usually one day and covers areas such
as:
Group
management and leadership
Navigation
Security on
steep ground
Completion of this training course is not a measure or guarantee of
competence of course participants , but may be useful training for those
in leadership positions within clubs.
