Level one –statements of attainment - Hill-Walking

*      Participants will be able to complete a two night camping expedition in open country

*      Participants will have played a significant part in organizing the expedition and be thoroughly familiar with all the planning details and decisions including choice of equipment and safety factors .

*      Participants will complete the journey in the company of others but be capable of acting independently at any time in any aspect of the journey

*      Participants will be familiar with the Country Code and good practice in the mountains

*      Participants will have appraised the activity and its value for the personal and
social development of young people

*      Participants will record their experience in a log book

Level two statements of attainment - Hill-Walking

*      Participants will complete Basic Outdoor Leadership and Basic First Aid elements

*      Participants will be familiar with areas of open and wild country in which they intend to work with young people .  They will also be conversant with any conservation or access issues relating to these sites and should communicate a concern for the environment to their group

*      Participants will have developed a thorough routine for all aspects of planning and preparation necessary when taking a group into open or wild country . 

*      Participants will demonstrate their ability to deal competently with simple incidents or emergencies in familiar terrain . 

*      Participants will be able to demonstrate the basic skills necessary to equip themselves properly , moving the across uneven and steep terrain , finding the way and living out of doors

*      Participants will have developed the skills required to provide guidance and advice to others involved in Hill-Walking including overnight camping . 

*      Participants will record their experience in a log book including at least three quality mountain days over and above the course .

Log book should include considerable extended experience of working with groups in a variety of familiar areas and personal experience in unfamiliar mountain terrain and any additional relevant qualifications .  

 


Level fourstatements of attainment - Hill-Walking

*      Participants will complete elements in Advanced Outdoor Leadership , Advanced First Aid , NIMTB and Mountain Leader Award ( summer )

*      Participants will have a year round knowledge and experience of the mountain environment found in the British Isles and in Ireland in particular ( excluding snow and ice conditions )

*      Participants will be capable of planning a safe and progressive programme of learning activity in open , wild or mountainous terrain to suit different levels of ability and a variety of objectives

*      Participants will be capable of making reasoned judgments even in unfamiliar terrain and be capable of dealing competently with emergencies

*      Participants will both use and demonstrate effective methods of teaching and group management in the variety of circumstances encountered in progressive hill-walking courses

*      Participants will record their experience in a log book including the accumulation of at least 40 QMD ‘s over and above the course .

including Adult Leader Courses in unfamiliar wild country . Specific approval should be sought for areas not normally used


All year round in British Isles ( excluding snow and ice conditions) Staffing ratio as deemed appropriate for conditions prevailing to ensure safe conduct of the activity

Log book should include considerable extended experience of working with groups in a variety of familiar areas and personal experience in unfamiliar mountain terrain and any additional relevant qualifications .
