The Ulster Federation of Rambling Clubs (UFRC) is deeply saddened to hear of the death of two hill walkers in the Mourne Mountains on Sunday 13 January 2019 and the possible injury to others. We wish to express our sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
UFRC understands why people want to walk in the hills during the winter months when conditions can be more challenging. However, these tragic incidents are a reminder that extreme care needs to be taken as the weather conditions on the mountains can change quickly and dramatically. Walkers should take heed of local forecasts and be prepared to change their planned routes away from high and exposed ground.
On behalf of all hill walkers we express our gratitude to the Mourne Mountain Rescue and other rescue services who responded to the call outs yesterday.
