The UFRC was represented by President Reg Magowan at the latest meeting of the Connswater Greenway Stakeholder Forum held on 16th August. Many of our Clubs seek new and shorter walks on Summer Evenings and in the Winter months and this development opens many new opportunities. Clubs might want to include some of the route in their 2014 programmes

The latest news is that a new bridge linking Victoria Park toAirport Roadshould be in place by the end of the year. A “Name the Bridge” competition has resulted in a shortlist of five names which will be voted on by the public next month. The significance of this bridge to Walkers and Cyclists should not be underestimated. When in place both will have a continuous route from Comber to the Titanic Quarter and on to Sprucefield via Lisburn using the Lagan Towpath and in the other direction along the Lough Shore Coastal Path to join theNewtownabbey Way. And when the Connswater Greenway is finally completed links will connect through to the Castlereagh Hills above Cregagh Glen. All we need now is a connection through to join theUlster Wayat Holywood!!

Future plans include a “Cycle” café (but I am sure Walkers will be equally welcome) at the Holywood Arches. Alas this won’t be available until the end of next year. However more immediately for those interested in the “Arts” a C S Lewis Festival is planned for November. For further details go to www.communitygreenway.co.uk
