President of UFRC Reg Magowan has been awarded a MBE for services to education in Northern Ireland in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Although his award is primarily for his work as Chair of the Board of Governors of Grosvenor Grammar School Reg has been involved with young people and the outdoors for many years.

From the age of 14 he was a member of the Youth Hostelling Association and did much voluntary work in hostels over the years. He served as Chairman from 1983 -2001 and represented Northern Ireland at many International Conferences. He also served as Chair of the Council for Education in World Citizenship, an organisation dedicated to encouraging young people to become active citizens in both a local and global context. Reg has also spent time working with young people in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

More recently he has served as Chair of UFRC for four years and as President continues to take a close interest in all aspects of the work of the Federation with particular interest in development of the Ulster Way. (Reg was a member of the original Committee set up in the 60’s). He continues to pursue his first love of travel and the accompanying photo shows him in Antarctica earlier in the year.
