Out & About Hikers Invitation Walk

Sun 1st Oct- Join Out & About Hikers for a walk in the spectacular Mourne Mountains. A solid invitation to a rocky challenge ideal for those looking to experience walking with a club.

Date: Sun 1st Oct 2017
Time:  11:30am to 5pm (The group will leave at 11:30am sharp to begin the walk)
Location: Mourne Mountains- Starting and finishing at Meelmore Lodge Car Park. (There is an option to meet in Belfast at 10:15am and car share. However this can be agreed with Michael when booking).
Length of Walk: The total length of the walk is approximately 8 miles long over heather, bog , grass and stone paths. The ascent from Meelmore Lodge to the Hare’s Gap is 240 metres and the ascent from the shore of Ben Crom reservoir to the Brandy Pad is 200 metres. The walk, including short breaks and lunch, will take from 5 to 6 hours to complete.
Number of Spaces: Spaces limited to 12 people and expected to fill up fast. Places should be reserved no later than Friday 15th September.

Have you seen the mysterious rock formations in the Kilkeel River Valley? Join Out & About Hikers for a walk through the mysterious rock formations of the Mill River Valley in the Mournes. Experience the social benefits of getting out for a walk with like minded individuals in the great outdoors and make some new friends along the way.

From Meelmore car park the group will head up Hare’s Gap before descending to the shore of Ben Crom for a picnic lunch. After lunch the group will go up through the mysterious rock formations of the Mill River Valley towards the Brandy Pad and returning via Hare’s Gap to the car park. This is a challenging ramble in the Mournes and requires a good level of fitness. There are no major summits involved. The total height climbed is over 450 metres so walkers require a good level of general fitness and stamina.

After the walk you are welcome to join the club for tea and coffee in Meelmore Lodge Bistro which remains open until 6pm on Sundays.

This event is part of the Ulster Federation of Rambling Clubs (UFRC) Open Weekend.

What to bring: Warm clothes, walking boots, waterproofs, backpack with a packed lunch and water. A change of clothes in the car in case of heavy rain.
Suitability: Participants must be aged 18+ years old. Participants should have a good level of general fitness and stamina.
